First staged at Hampstead Theatre with a cast including Maureen Lipman and Julia McKenzie, Richard Harris’s hit comedy enjoyed a hugely successful West End run before being made into a TV play starring the late Paul Eddington as Roger. Later still, a TV mini series was spawned, featuring the characters that make up the cricket team captained by Roger.

Synopsis

Set in a cricket Pavilion, Outside Edge deals with an eventful Saturday afternoon in the lives of five men and four women.

Roger is having trouble getting a team together for the afternoons fixture against the British Railways Maintenance Division Yeading East but this proves to be the least of anyones worries. Bob is having marriage trouble as he is still doing odd jobs for his ex-wife beind his current wife Ginnie's back. Kevin is trying to fight off his over-affectionate wife Maggie while at the same time nurse his injured spinning finger and Alex's new girlfriend ends up shutting herself in the toilets having hysterics. Even Roger's seemingly perfect marriage to Miriam hits the skids when she discovers he was playing away from home in more ways than one on a trip to Dorking last year.

Just when it seems things can't get any worse for them, it starts to rain.

The cast is a real mix of society ranging from the young cocky upstart, the slimy ineffectual equipment provider, a slightly devious ‘decent chap’ who can’t say no and, lastly, the overweight slob. As with many a situation, it is mainly the wives and girlfriends who make the men what they are, whether they like it or not. Whether it be the slightly subservient Mim, the boisterous and randy Maggie, the slightly pompous Ginnie or the latest girlfriend with the bladder problem, all the characters will find us all looking around and realising that we all know someone who is quite like someone.
